Independent scholarly platform · Australia-based

Children experience school through conditions as well as content.

School Conditions Lab is a scholar-led research platform connecting play, movement, climate, school environments, supervision and everyday routines to help children and teachers thrive.

Founded and led by Associate Professor Brendon Hyndman, School of Education, Charles Sturt University.

A social-ecological view

The child is the centre, not another condition.

School conditions are never experienced uniformly. The same schoolyard, routine or weather event can be enabling for one child and excluding for another. The platform therefore begins with the individual child and examines the conditions around them. Informed by Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory, this lens applies ecological thinking to the everyday conditions of schooling.

Four concentric circles place the individual child at the centre, surrounded by social relationships, material and environmental conditions, and organisational and system conditions.

Research architecture

Four connected pillars

A coherent platform for investigating the overlooked infrastructure through which children and teachers experience school.

01

Play, recess and belonging

How children experience play, social connection, autonomy, inclusion and the everyday culture of break times.

02

Movement, health and wellbeing

How school conditions enable or constrain movement, physical activity, development, health and wellbeing.

03

Climate, heat and exposure

How heat, sun, shade, weather and regional climate shape participation, safety and educational equity.

04

Environments, routines and implementation

How grounds, equipment, supervision, schedules, policies and local enactment influence everyday school life.

Current research program

Heat-Safe Schools

Connecting climate exposure, school infrastructure, policy guidance and local decision-making to understand who can participate safely, where and under what conditions.

Research provenance

One connected program, built over time.

School Conditions Lab brings together Brendon Hyndman's work across playgrounds, children's enjoyment, recess, movement, supervision, outdoor environments, heat and policy enactment.

The foundational LEAP intervention now sits alongside Play Latitude, Heat-Safe Schools and comparative work. The Lab makes the connecting program visible without relabelling every earlier study.

Ideas and impact

Research made visible, useful and difficult to overlook.

Nearly two decades of research have travelled through public articles, media, podcasts, keynotes, policy contributions and resources for schools. The Lab curates this work around the ideas that have shaped the field.

Contact and collaborate

Bring the right school conditions question into view.

The Lab welcomes focused conversations with researchers, schools, education systems, policymakers, media and conference organisers where there is a clear connection to the research program.
